Sunshine Coast MP Andrew Wallace Calls on Men to Take Charge of Their Health During Men's Health Week
Sunshine Coast MP Andrew Wallace is urging men across the Coast to take charge of their health, particularly their mental well-being, this International Men's Health Week (June 10th-16th, 2024).
While the rising cost of living may strain budgets, Mr. Wallace highlights a crucial point that preventative healthcare is essential. Statistics show men are less likely to visit a doctor regularly despite facing higher rates of suicide and specific health concerns. "A healthy you is a happier you and better equipped to handle life's challenges," said Mr Wallace.
This Men's Health Week, the focus is on empowering men to take control:
Prioritise Prevention: Regular checkups for blood pressure, cholesterol, prostate, skin (significant for Sunshine Coast residents due to sun exposure) and blood sugar, are vital. And don’t forget your dental health!
Break the Silence on Mental Health: Talking openly about mental health is a sign of strength, not weakness. Mr Wallace encourages men to contact a friend or family member or utilise local resources like Grab Life By The Balls, a local mental health charity.
Get Active, Connect, and Inspire: Organise outings with loved ones, play sports, go fishing, hike, or try something new! Social connection and physical activity are crucial for mental and physical well-being. Share your health journey and inspire others to prioritise their well-being.
"This Men's Health Week, let's create an environment where men feel comfortable discussing their health, especially mental health," concludes Mr Wallace. "Remember, prevention is key. Take the first step today!"
